How Amex statements are read

Refunds are marked CR

Amex marks a credit with CR after the amount, and on many statements the CR sits on its own line under the row it belongs to. The converter attaches it to the right row, so a refund comes out as money back rather than as a second purchase.

The spend total is net of refunds

The total new spend Amex prints has refunds already taken off. Add up the purchases in the export and you will get a larger number; the difference is the credits.

Parse Amex statements in your own app

Send the PDF to the StatementBear API and get JSON back: every transaction with its direction and category, the account it belongs to, and a check that the totals reconcile. No bank login, no template per bank. The first 25 documents are free, then $0.49 each.
