How Discover statements are read
Payments and credits carry a minus sign
Payments and Credits come first, and every amount in that section is negative: INTERNET PAYMENT - THANK YOU, a Cashback Bonus redemption, a merchant refund. The export keeps them apart, so a payment is marked as a card repayment and a refund reduces spending instead of counting as income.
Purchases carry Discover's own category
Each purchase has a Merchant Category such as Merchandise or Restaurants, and its description often runs over two or three lines: the merchant, its parent company and a reference number. The lines are joined into one description, and each row gets the same categories every other statement uses, so a Discover card and a bank account add up the same way in the report.
Parse Discover statements in your own app
Send the PDF to the StatementBear API and get JSON back: every transaction with its direction and category, the account it belongs to, and a check that the totals reconcile. No bank login, no template per bank. The first 25 documents are free, then $0.49 each.
